What causes skin cancer?

UV radiation is the major cause of skin cancer. The most common form of Ultra Violet (UV) radiation exposure is from the suns rays, but you can also experience UV exposure from artificial sources such as tanning beds. UV radiation causes sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage. If you act SunSmart you can prevent the suns damage.

  • How can you protect yourself from the sun?

1.Slip on covering clothes

  • Choose clothes that cover as much skin as possible

2. Slop on SPF

  • SPF 30 or above

  • Apply to dry skin at least 20minutes before you go outside

  • Re-apply every 2hrs

  • Use approximately one teaspoon per limb using approximately 35mL for one Sunscreen application

3. Slap on a hat

  • Choose a hat that shades your nose, neck, and ears. Broad-brimmed, bucket hat or legionnaire

4. Seek shade

  • Find shade or bring your own such as a shade tent to reduce your UV radiation

5. Slide on some sunglasses

  • Sunglasses should be worn outside during day light hours

  • Choose glasses that meet the Australian standard AS/NSZ 1067

  • Sunglasses and a broad brimmed hat worn together can reduce UV radiation to the eyes by up to 98%

 

When should you use sun protection?

When the sun’s radiation reaches 3 or higher sun protection is recommended. However, if you are outdoors for an extended periods if you are outdoors for an extended periods then it is recommended. To check the daily UV levels, you can check the SunSmart app or look at the Bureau of meteorology website.
